Shedding Light in the Darkness

Monsanto’s Poisoning of Maui

Monsanto has painted itself as a kindly company bringing needed jobs to Maui and Molokai. They neglect to mention in their PR that they are helping destroy the land with dangerous cocktails of pesticides.

In their 2013 official report prepared for the County of Maui, under the heading Restricted Pesticide in Maui County, 20 pesticides are identified, including four banned in Europe.

Atrazine 4L – Atrazine is the common name for an herbicide that is widely used to kill weeds. One of the primary ways that atrazine can affect health is by altering the way that the reproductive system works. Studies of couples living on farms that use atrazine for weed control found an increase in the risk of pre-term delivery. Atrazine has been shown to cause changes in blood hormone levels in animals that affected the ability to reproduce. Atrazine also caused liver, kidney, and heart damage in animals.
After atrazine is applied to soils, it will remain there for several days to several months; in rare situations, it may remain in soils for a few years. Any atrazine that is washed from the soil into streams and other bodies of water will stay there for a long time, because breakdown of the chemical is slow in rivers and lakes. It will also persist for a long time in groundwater.
Atrazine is banned in the EU.
From the Int J Occup Environ Health. 2006 Jul-Sep;12(3):260-7.
The European Union (EU) announced a ban of atrazine because of ubiquitous and unpreventable water contamination. The authors reviewed regulatory procedures and government documents, and report efforts by the manufacturer of atrazine, Syngenta, to influence the U.S. atrazine assessment, by submitting flawed scientific data as evidence of no harm, and by meeting repeatedly and privately with EPA to negotiate the government’s regulatory approach. Many of the details of these negotiations continue to be withheld from the public.

Asana XL (Esfenvalate) is a restricted-use pesticide because it is extremely toxic to fish and aquatic invertebrates. Use with care when applying in the vicinity of any body of water. Do not apply by ground within 25 feet, or by air within 150 feet of lakes, reservoirs, rivers, permanent streams, marshes, natural ponds, estuaries or commercial fish-farm ponds. Asana XL is highly toxic to bees directly exposed to applications.

Baythroid XL (beta-cyfluthrin) – This pesticide is extremely toxic to fish and aquatic invertebrates. For terrestrial uses, do not apply directly to water, to areas where surface water is present or to intertidal areas below the mean high water mark. Do not apply when weather conditions favor drift from treated areas. Drift and runoff from treated areas may be hazardous to aquatic organisms in neighboring areas. This pesticide is highly toxic to bees exposed to direct treatment or residues on blooming crops or weeds. Do not apply this product or allow it to drift to blooming crops or weeds on which bees are actively foraging.

Cobalt Advanced (lambda-cyhalothrin) Very toxic to aquatic organisms with long-lasting effects. Do not contaminate an aquatic environment with chemical or empty container. Do not spray over, or allow to drift over, an aquatic environment. Do not apply into, onto or over water. Toxic to the soil environment. Do not allow drift outside the target area to occur. Very toxic to terrestrial vertebrates such as birds and reptiles. Very toxic to terrestrial invertebrates. Very toxic to bees. Do not apply this product to any plant or tree likely to be visited by bees at the time of application. Researchers found that chronic exposure to both lamda cyhalothrin and imidacloprid clearly impacted bees’ natural foraging behavior. Lambda-cyhalothrin is a suspected endocrine disruptor.
Cyhalothrin is banned in the EU.

Coragen – studies have demonstrated that it has low toxicity to mammals, fish and birds along with high insecticidal potency. Coragen is an insecticidal preparate containing chlorantraniliprole as the active substance.

Dual II Magnum (S-metolachlor) – The active ingredient in Dual II MAGNUM has the potential to leach through soil into ground water under certain conditions as a result of agricultural use. Use of this chemical in areas where soils are permeable, particularly where the water table is shallow, may result in ground water contamination. The active ingredient in Dual II MAGNUM has the potential to contaminate surface water through ground spray drift. Evidence of the bioaccumulation of metolachlor in edible species of fish as well as its adverse effect on the growth and development raise concerns on its effects on human health.

Gramoxone Inteon (paraquat dichloride) In 2011, a US National Institutes of Health study showed a link between paraquat use and Parkinson’s disease in farm workers. Paraquat increases production of certain oxygen derivatives that may harm cellular structures, and that people who used paraquat, or other pesticides with a similar mechanism of action, were more likely to develop Parkinson’s.
Paraquat-induced toxicity in rats has also been linked to Parkinson’s-like neurological degenerative mechanisms. Paraquat herbicide is toxic to animals, including humans. The substance is very toxic to aquatic organisms. The substance may cause long-term effects in the aquatic environment.

Intrro/Micro-Tech (Alachlor) is an herbicide from the chloroacetanilide family. Alachlor is a highly toxic chemical that is widely considered an endocrine disruptor. It has been linked to kidney and liver damage as well as birth and developmental defects. In January, 2012 a French court found Monsanto, which manufactures Lasso (alachlor), guilty of chemical poisoning of a French farmer in 2004. Since 2006, use of alachlor as a herbicide has been banned in the European Union.

Lannate LV Insecticide (Methomyl) – This pesticide is toxic to fish and wildlife. Drift and runoff from treated areas may be hazardous to aquatic organisms in neighboring areas. This product is highly toxic to bees exposed to direct treatment on blooming crops or weeds.

Lorsban 4E & Lorsban Advanced (chlorpyrifos) is toxic to birds and wildlife and extremely toxic to fish. Inhalation: Prolonged excessive exposure to mist may cause serious adverse effects, even death. Vapor concentrations are attainable which could be hazardous on single exposure. Breathing the air in an area in which chlorpyrifos has recently been sprayed may produce a variety of effects on the nervous system including headaches, blurred vision, watering of the eyes (called lacrimation), excessive salivation, runny nose, dizziness, confusion, muscle weakness or tremors, nausea, diarrhea, and sudden changes in heart rate. Has caused cancer in laboratory animals.

Mustang Max (zeta-cypermethrin) Extremely Hazardous to Bees. Zeta-cypermethrin is considered highly toxic to fish and aquatic arthropods and slightly toxic to birds.

Penncap-M (methyl parathion) – Among the most extremely acutely toxic pesticides, parathion is notorious for the number and severity of human poisonings it causes each year. EPA classifies parathion as a class C, possible human carcinogen. Do not breathe vapors or spray mist. The EPA banned the use of methyl parathion on all fruits and some vegetables citing the protection of children from exposures from residues left on commonly eaten foods such as peaches, apples, pears, plums and tomatoes. This pesticide is highly toxic to birds and mammals. This product is highly toxic to bees exposed to direct treatment or residues on blooming crops or weeds.

Permethrin – An insecticide in the pyrethroid family. Permethrin affects the nervous system in insects, causing muscle spasms, paralysis and death. Permethrin is highly toxic to fish and other animals that live in either salt water or fresh water. The EPA has classified permethrin as a carcinogen because it causes lung tumors in female mice and liver tumors in mice of both sexes. Permethrin inhibits the activity of the immune system in laboratory tests, and also binds to the receptors for a male sex hormone. It causes chromosome aberrations in human and hamster cells. Permethrin is highly toxic to bees and other beneficial insects. Permethrin is banned in the EU.

Simazine (Princep) – Simazine is a triazine herbicide. Simazineis a possible carcinogen. Simazine has very low toxicity to all aquatic species  Voliam Xpress, a new pre-mix insecticide that delivers multiple modes of action for control of a number of yield-robbing lepidopteran pests in corn. The two active ingredients in Voliam Xpress, chlorantraniliprole and lambda-cyhalothrin, work together to provide fast knockdown and residual control of lepidopteran pests. Voliam Xpress is highly toxic to bees exposed to direct treatment or to residues on blooming crops and weeds.

Warrior with Zeon Technology & Warrior II with Zeon Technology (lambda-cyhalothrin) – This pesticide is extremely toxic to fish and aquatic organisms and toxic to wildlife. This product is highly toxic to bees exposed to direct treatment or residues

Force 3.0G – Highly toxic to aquatic invertebrates and fish. Use Force 3g insecticide only once per year.
