Sugar Blues Part 2

It has a daunting title, but the just released research paper “Sugar Industry Influence on the Scientific Agenda of the National Institute of Dental Research’s 1971 National Caries Program: A Historical Analysis of Internal Documents” makes fascinating reading.
Researchers from the University of California, San Francisco, came across a cache of industry documents revealing how the sugar industry manipulated the National Institutes of Health in the 1960s and ‘70s to steer research away from the role of sugar in tooth decay. Instead of looking at sugar, the obvious culprit, the industry got the government to fund studies on such crazy approaches as vaccines to prevent tooth decay, while, as early as 1950, they knew it was a fact that sugar caused tooth decay.
The report’s authors note that the sugar industry currently promotes fluoride toothpaste and dental sealants, rather than reducing sugar consumption to protect tooth health.
