What Happens When an American Restaurant Chain Dumps GMOs?

The Ecologist just published an insightful article on the Chipotle restaurant chain’s decision to go GMO free. It suggests – “As Chipotle goes GMO-free, Monsanto’s worst fear is coming true.”

“A clear sign that the move is significant, however, is that Chipotle’s decision was met with a tidal-wave of establishment media abuse. Despite the company’s rational explanation, Chipotle has been called irresponsible, anti-science, irrational, and much more by the Washington Post, Time, the Chicago Tribune and the LA Times  and many others.”

The scale of the media attack on the company was mind blowing.

The Washington Post editorial was scathingly headlined – “Chipotle’s GMO gimmick is hard to swallow”

“On Monday, the chain announced that its entire menu is GMO-free – meaning it contains no ingredients derived from genetically modified plants or animals. Thus has a leading food company added its imprimatur to a global propaganda campaign that is not only contrary to the best scientific knowledge but also potentially harmful to vulnerable populations around the world.”

Time magazine’s Money section published a Motley Fool column headlined – “Why Chipotle Mexican Grill Going GMO-Free is Terrible News”

With the suggestion: “When the need for publicity trumps the need for making sound business decisions, I would hesitate to own shares.”

The Chicago Tribune also published an editorial – “Chipotle’s GMO message is Muddled.” The LA Times weighed in with the derisive headline – “Chipotle’s junk science on GMOs”

Their editorial charged: “Chipotle’s announcement this week that safety compelled it to remove all genetically modified organisms from its food is rooted either in ignorance or in crass profit-seeking at the expense of science. More than two decades of research indicate that GMOs are not only safe for humans and the environment, but also contribute to global sustainability and poverty alleviation. Chipotle stokes the anti-GMO hysteria that threatens to marginalize a field of science that already has demonstrated important benefits.”

Business Insider proclaimed: “Chipotle’s flashy ban on GMOs is totally backfiring”
Suggesting: “Chipotle’s recent ban on genetically modified ingredients is facing mounting criticism.”

And New York Magazine wailed – “Chipotle Is Promoting Opportunistic Anti-Science Hysteria”

Even the alternative media pitched in slamming the company with Slate: Chipotle Wants to Sell “Food With Integrity.” Dropping GMOs Is the Wrong Way to Do It. And Mother Jones – “Chipotle Says It’s Getting Rid of GMOs. Here’s the Problem. GMOs are totally safe to eat.”

It all makes you wonder what giant biotech company was behind this media offensive to attack the promotion of more healthier food?
