Who knew that humans and giant, dangerous dinosaurs were roving the world together? Well that’s reality according to the school text book Life Science, published by Bob Jones University Press. Here’s a quote: “Dinosaurs and humans were definitely on the earth at the same time and may have even lived side by side within the past few thousand years.” A stunning revelation, except science tells us it’s impossible.
But that doesn’t stop fundamentalist Christians from believing all kinds of bizarre stuff.
“Are dinosaurs alive today? Scientists are becoming more convinced of their existence. Have you heard of the ‘Loch Ness Monster’ in Scotland? Nessie appears to be a plesiosaur.” Extract from Biology 1099, Accelerated Christian Education Inc. (1995).
Other wonders from their wacky alternative reality include the idea that dragons were real. Quoting Life Science: “(Is) it possible that a fire-breathing animal really existed? Today some scientists are saying yes. They have found large chambers in certain dinosaur skulls…The large skull chambers could have contained special chemical-producing glands. When the animal forced the chemicals out of its mouth or nose, these substances may have combined and produced fire and smoke.”
How about slavery? “A few slave holders were undeniably cruel. Examples of slaves beaten to death were not common, neither were they unknown. The majority of slave holders treated their slaves well.” United States History for Christian Schools, Bob Jones University Press, 1991.
Happy singing slaves – “To help His children endure the difficulties of slavery, God gave the Christian slaves the ability to spiritually combine the African heritage of song with the dignity and power of Christian praise.” America: Land I Love, A Beka Book.
And the Klu Klux Klan? “The Klan in some areas of the country tried to be a means of reform, fighting the decline in morality and using the symbol of the cross. Klan targets were bootleggers, wife-beaters, and immoral movies. In some communities it achieved a certain respectability as it worked with politicians.” United States History for Christian Schools, 3rd ed., Bob Jones University Press, 2001
Other gems from Christian school texts include this on hippies – “Many young people turned to drugs and immoral lifestyles; these youth became known as hippies. They went without bathing, wore dirty, ragged, unconventional clothing, and deliberately broke all codes of politeness or manners. Many of the rock musicians they followed belonged to Eastern religious cults or practiced Satan worship.” America: Land I Love.
Environmentalism – “Global environmentalists have said and written enough to leave no doubt that their goal is to destroy the prosperous economies of the world’s richest nations.” Economics: Work and Prosperity in Christian Perspective, 2nd ed., A Beka Book, 1999
Vietnam War – “The Vietnam War divided the country into the hawks who supported the fight against Communism, and doves, who were soft on Communism.” United States History: Heritage of Freedom.
Nelson Mandela – “Mandela’s political intentions soon became clear as he appointed Communists to key positions and extended government control over businesses and industries. The growing influence of Communism concerns South Africa’s citizens, especially Christians who make up a large part of the population.” New World History and Geography in Christian Perspective, A Beka Book.
Buddha – Buddha’s search for enlightenment involved “leaving his wife and newborn son” and engaging in unsuccessful “self-torture.” Old World History and Geography in Christian Perspective, A Beka Book.
And history – “The Bible is our only completely accurate record of ancient history.” Old World History and Geography in Christian Perspective, A Beka Book.
