France Bans Roundup

France has announced a ban on over the counter sales of the weedkiller Roundup from garden centers. The weedkiller is used by amateur gardeners as well as farmers and is the foremost product of Monsanto.

French Ecology Minister Segolene Royal told France 3 television on Sunday: “France must be on the offensive with regards to the banning of pesticides. I have asked garden centers to stop putting Monsanto’s Roundup on sale in self-service aisles.” Roundup will no longer be sold to private individuals.

Shortly after the WHO announcement about a possible cancer link, Patrick Moore, a controversial defender of genetically modified crops, offered to drink Roundup on French television to prove its safety. But when a TV host offered him a glass of the stuff, Moore refused, and the video of the exchange quickly went viral online.

The Dutch Parliament recently voted to ban all glyphosate-based herbicides including Roundup, from the end of 2015 and beyond. “In garden centers Roundup is promoted as harmless, but unsuspecting customers have no idea what the risks of this product are,” said Esther Ouwehand, a Dutch Parliament member. “Especially children are sensitive to toxic substances and should therefore not be exposed to it.”
