America is an Oligarchy – Former President Jimmy Carter

In a new interview with Thom Hartmann, former President Jimmy Carter was asked about the current state of politics in America. “Now it’s just an oligarchy with unlimited political bribery being the essence of getting the nominations for president or to elect the president. And the same thing applies to governors and U.S. senators and congress members. So now we’ve just seen a complete subversion of our political system as a payoff to major contributors, who want and expect and sometimes get favors for themselves after the election’s over.”
An oligarchy is a form of government in which all power is vested in a few persons. A new report in the Huffington Post noted that more than half the money in the current presidential race so far came from donors who have given at least $100,000. For the first time in more than a century, the majority of funding for a presidential election is coming in six-figure or larger checks from corporations and the wealthiest Americans.
Carter called the Citizen United decision which allows corporations unlimited funding access to political candidates, “the stupidest decision that the Supreme Court ever made” in March 2012. He said, “we have one of the worst election processes in the world.”
