Aluminium-ToxicityWriting in Frontiers in Neurology, Prof. Chris Exley says the human brain is both a target and a sink for aluminum on entry into the body – “the presence of aluminum in the human brain should be a red flag alerting us all to the potential dangers of the aluminum age. We are all accumulating a known neurotoxin in our brain from our conception to our death. Why do we treat this inevitability with almost total complacency?”

Professor Exley is the Reader in Bioinorganic Chemistry at The Birchall Centre, Keele University in Staffordshire and Honorary Professor at the UHI Millennium Institute.

A world authority on the link between human exposure to aluminum and its likely contribution to Alzheimer’s disease, his research includes investigated a case of vaccine-associated chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) and macrophagic myofasciitis in an individual demonstrating aluminium overload. This was the first report linking aluminium overload with either of the two conditions and the possibility is considered that the coincident aluminium overload contributed significantly to the severity of these conditions in a patient.

The CFS in a 43-year-old man, with no history of previous illness, followed a course of five vaccinations, each of which included an aluminium-based adjuvant. The result was a severe and ongoing immune response to elevated body stores of aluminium, which was initiated by a course of five aluminium adjuvant-based vaccinations within a short period of time.

While the use of aluminium-based adjuvants may be safe, it is also possible that for a significant number of individuals they may represent a significant health risk, such as was found in this case. The human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine uses an aluminium based adjuvant.

Research from Keele University in BMC Pediatrics shows that infant formulas are heavily contaminated with aluminium. In 2010 the Keele group, headed by Professor Chris Exley, published a paper showing that the aluminium content of infant formulas was too high (http://www.biomedcentral.com/1471-2431/10/63).

The Keele group subsequently followed up this research with an even more extensive study looking at the 30 most popular brands of infant formula in the United Kingdom. The results show high levels of aluminium in each of the 30 infant formulas.

Other research from scientists in the UK and France suggests that human exposure to aluminum may be a significant factor in falling sperm counts and reduced male fertility. Fluorescence microscopy using an aluminum-specific stain confirmed the presence of aluminum in semen and showed aluminum inside individual sperm. And the team of scientists, at the universities of Lyon and Saint-Etienne in France and Keele in the UK, found that the higher the aluminum, the lower sperm count.

Professor Exley said: “There has been a significant decline in male fertility, including sperm count, throughout the developed world over the past several decades and previous research has linked this to environmental factors such as endocrine disruptors.

“Human exposure to aluminum has increased significantly over the same time period and our observation of significant contamination of male semen by aluminum must implicate aluminum as a potential contributor to these changes in reproductive fertility.”
